Prices at Starbucks, Shake Shack, Chipotle and Taco Bell all jumped by roughly 5% in those two months, while restaurant prices nationwide rose just 0.4%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In addition, fentanyl is on the loose in the area. The terrible opiate, 50 times more powerful than heroin, whose use has now been declared an epidemic, is rampant in the city. The drug is fast acting and cheap, and it is estimated that one person in the country dies every five minutes from its use. It has already killed more Americans than the Vietnam War and Afghanistan combined.

Forever known in the restaurant world as the city of meat, Dallas is home to some truly excellent takes on America’s favorite sandwich. It’s hard to overstate the importance of Tommy’s to the greater LA burger scene. This is the place that helped to start it all. Last year, Sacramento Unified School District increased wages for its food service workers by 10%, hiking another 6% in July to bring workers to $20 per hour. According to an AP report, it was the district’s largest single raise in nearly three decades. A district official told the AP food-service workers could earn up to $25.51 per hour, but would only work three hours per day and be ineligible for health benefits. This year, 22 states have raised their minimum wage, affecting nearly 10 million workers. But better pay is also part of a problem, since businesses need to front higher labor costs on top of rising food prices—and are now shifting that cost onto consumers through price hikes. Who doesn’t love a big, tender, and juicy steakhouse burger? Problem is, they’re difficult to replicate at home because most steakhouses blend different cuts of beef, like sirloin, chuck, and short ribs, to customize the flavor and fat content of their hamburgers. While it’s possible to grind your own meat or ask your butcher for a special blend, there’s an easier way. By combining ordinary supermarket ground beef with a panade — or mixture of bread and milk — and lots of seasoning, you can make steakhouse-style burgers in no time.

It's just that simple when you care about your customers and the quality of food sold. Not enough can be said about a burger that is always good. On any given day, at either of its locations, the burger at Goldburger is the same great smash burger. It is consistently served hot and fresh off the grill, and will always satisfy a craving.

Writing Survey Questions

study design examples

This type of research design seeks to understand people’s perspectives, emotions, and behaviours in specific situations. Here, the aim for researchers is to uncover the essence of human experience without making any assumptions or imposing preconceived ideas on their subjects. Quasi-experimental research design is used when the research aims involve identifying causal relations, but one cannot (or doesn’t want to) randomly assign participants to different groups (for practical or ethical reasons). Instead, with a quasi-experimental research design, the researcher relies on existing groups or pre-existing conditions to form groups for comparison. Research design refers to the overall plan, structure or strategy that guides a research project, from its conception to the final data analysis.

Action research design

Quasi-experimental research design is similar to experimental research design, but it lacks one or more of the features of a true experiment. This type of research design is used when it is not feasible or ethical to conduct a true experiment. This blog summarizes the concepts of cluster randomization, and the logistical and statistical considerations while designing a cluster randomized controlled trial. A questionnaire, like a conversation, should be grouped by topic and unfold in a logical order.

Qualitative research vs. Quantitative research

A case study is an in-depth study of a particular research problem rather than a sweeping statistical survey. It is often used to narrow down a very broad field of research into one or a few easily researchable examples. The case study research design is also useful for testing whether a specific theory and model actually applies to phenomena in the real world. Each type of study has different methods with unique advantages and disadvantages.

Types of sampling, timescale, and location

Causal research design is used when the goal is to find a cause-and-effect relationship between two variables – an independent vs dependent variable. Researchers conduct a quantitative synthesis of data from multiple studies to provide a comprehensive overview of research findings on a particular topic. When randomness isn’t feasible, embrace the pragmatic alternative of Non-equivalent Group Designs. These designs allow ethical comparison across multiple groups without random assignment, ensuring robust research conduct.

However, observational research may be influenced by observer bias and can be time-consuming and difficult to replicate. These examples demonstrate the diversity of research designs used in different fields to address a wide range of research questions and objectives. Researchers select the most appropriate design based on the specific context and goals of their study. Longitudinal surveys collect data from the same participants over an extended period, allowing for the study of changes over time. There are various research designs, such as experimental, observational, survey, case study, and longitudinal designs, each suited to different research questions and objectives. The choice of research design depends on the nature of the research and the goals of the study.

Grounded theory typically involves collecting data through interviews or observations and then analysing it to identify patterns and themes that emerge from the data. These emerging ideas are then validated by collecting more data until a saturation point is reached (i.e., no new information can be squeezed from the data). There are many different research design types when it comes to qualitative studies, but here we’ll narrow our focus to explore the “Big 4”. Specifically, we’ll look at phenomenological design, grounded theory design, ethnographic design, and case study design.

A survey research design involves gathering information from a sample of individuals using a standardized questionnaire or interview format (Fowler, 2013). It can be retrospective (observing historical data) or prospective (collecting data forward in time). Cohort studies are often used in life sciences, social sciences, and health research (Marczyk, DeMatteo & Festinger, 2010; Ortiz & Greene, 2007). It also allows the researcher to adapt the study according to the emerging results, which can lead to a more nuanced and informed understanding of a research problem. However, this research design can be time-consuming and requires substantial resources, as it involves two phases of research. Sequential research design is a method that combines both quantitative and qualitative research approaches, in a sequence, to gain a broader understanding of a research problem (Abbott & McKinney, 2013; Leavy, 2022).

Reproducibility of Results - The statistical reproducibility of measurements (often in a clinical context), including the testing of instrumentation or techniques to obtain reproducible results. It is usually called a meta-analysis by the author or sponsoring body and should be differentiated from reviews of literature. Double-Blind Method - A method of studying a drug or procedure in which both the subjects and investigators are kept unaware of who is actually getting which specific treatment.

Research Design Vs Research Methodology

Philosophical Research ExampleA researcher studying ethics might use a philosophical research design to explore the concept of ‘justice’ in various societies. They would likely examine a variety of texts, historical contexts, and moral frameworks, before formulating a comprehensive theory of justice. Mixed-method research can provide a more in-depth understanding of a research problem or question.

However, any modifications should be made judiciously and with careful consideration of their impact on the study’s integrity and validity. It is advisable to document any changes made to the research design, along with a clear rationale for the modifications, in order to maintain transparency and allow for proper interpretation of the results. As you can see, a case study research design is particularly useful where a deep and contextualised understanding of a specific phenomenon or issue is desired. In other words, you can’t generalise the findings from a case study to the broader population.

Further, it is important to discern when it is best to use forced-choice close-ended questions (often denoted with a radio button in online surveys) versus “select-all-that-apply” lists (or check-all boxes). A 2019 Center study found that forced-choice questions tend to yield more accurate responses, especially for sensitive questions. Based on that research, the Center generally avoids using select-all-that-apply questions.

Survey ExampleA market research company might use a survey to understand consumer preferences for a new product. They could distribute the survey to a representative sample of their target market, asking questions about preferences, behaviors, and demographics to inform the product’s development and marketing strategy. However, the reliability of survey data can be affected by several factors, such as response bias and sample representativeness. Historical Research Example A historian might conduct research on the economic impact of the Great Depression on the United States. They would likely analyze data from that era, such as economic indicators, governmental policies, and personal accounts to form a comprehensive understanding of the economic climate of the time. This research method involves a deep dive into historical data to gain a clear understanding of past events, contexts, or phenomena.

Cohort Research ExampleA health researcher could study a cohort of smokers and non-smokers over a period of 20 years to understand the long-term effects of smoking on lung health. The researcher could gather data at regular intervals, tracking changes in the participants’ health over time. Unlike longitudinal studies, which examine variables across a time horizon, a cross-sectional design will only collect data at one point in time. A cross-sectional research design involves collecting data on a sample of individuals at one specific point in time (Levin, 2006). Example of a Case StudyA researcher conducts a case study in one classroom, examining a new teaching method that the teachers have implemented. The study focuses on how the teacher and students adapt to the new method, conducting semi-structured interviews with the teachers and students.

Questions that ask respondents to evaluate more than one concept (known as double-barreled questions) – such as “How much confidence do you have in President Obama to handle domestic and foreign policy? ” – are difficult for respondents to answer and often lead to responses that are difficult to interpret. In this example, it would be more effective to ask two separate questions, one about domestic policy and another about foreign policy. An example of a wording difference that had a significant impact on responses comes from a January 2003 Pew Research Center survey.

Livable wages mean more expensive burgers as California fast-food chains hike menu prices

This Dallas-based chain proves that multiple locations don’t have to mean burger mediocrity. Burger House has been serving up patties to meat enthusiasts across Dallas-Fort Worth for more than 60 years, which probably has something to do with the special seasoning used on those patties. Pasadena claims to be the birthplace of the cheeseburger, and while the truth of such things is lost to history, there is no denying the enduring prominence of Pie ‘n Burger. A legend since 1963, this diner turned ode to all things burger continues to turn out impeccable California classics, complete with special sauce and lightly melted American cheese. South Bay burger fans can find one of LA’s best burgers at Proudly Serving’s permanent location in Hermosa Beach. The great thing about going for sliders instead of a full-sized burger is that you can try a few wildly different burgers all at once. Head to the Arts District for a great burger served on what may be Los Angeles’s best patio. The burger at Everson Royce Bar starts with a single patty of prime beef chuck that’s topped with Tillamook cheddar and Dijonnaise sandwiched between an egg brioche bun.

In Oakland, news of seizures and overdoses is continuous, and muggings and robberies have been linked to the drug. Chipotle told investors last week that prices at nearly 500 of its California chains increased between 6% and 7% across its menu during the first week of April, compared to the same time last year. At California Chick-fil-A locations, prices have increased by over 10% on average since the start of April, according to research by Gordon Haskett Research Advisors. One Pizza Hut franchisee cited the wage hike as the reason for a preemptive wave of layoffs, in which more than 1,000 delivery drivers will be cut this year across the state. Corn on the cob is one of the most versatile sides around.

In-N-Out is so popular in California (also in Texas, Arizona, Nevada and it soon will be in New Mexico and Tennessee) that reports of this first shutdown have made headlines in the local news. By March 31, the famous yellow sign and decorative elements were gone. A summer cookout with burgers and the "works" should definitely include this seasonal pasta salad. The juicy cherry tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, and fresh basil are the stars of the show. This East Dallas spot is known for it’s chicken sandwiches but there are some out-and-out great burgers on the menu too. Case in point, the Notorious, with caramelized onions, jalapeno, bell peppers, and mozzarella.

The air fryer gets them nice and crispy without having to heat up a pot of oil. Scrumptious serving of philly steak with sauteed onions and jalapeno on toasted hoagie bread with mayo, lettuce and tomatoes. 48 juicy delicious wings tossed in any flavor you want with large fries 2 pieces, and a 2 bottle of 2-liter. 24 juicy delicious wings tossed in any flavor you want with large fries 2 pieces and a 2-liter bottle.

The legendary Route 66 stand has been reborn (and reconstructed almost identically) by longtime chef-owner Sonia Hong and new partner Lawrence Longo. Expect weekend lines for these classic LA burgers, served with a sear but not too thin. The Big Irv comes with pastrami, a hot dog, and more on top. The ample seafood selections rightfully earn the most attention at Connie and Ted’s in West Hollywood, but in-the-know fans also swing through for the hook burger.

In total the burger clocks in at $11 for a single, which leaves room in the budget for a beer or a cocktail off its extensive bar menu. Lowboy may be known first and foremost as a bar, but it's the burger at this Echo Park neighborhood hang that makes it such a standout. Who knew a burger could be so polarizing? Yet here is the Father’s Office burger, a no-ketchup-allowed option served on a split roll and topped with caramelized onions and lots of arugula. This massive sandwich uses dry-aged beef and Maytag blue cheese for a remarkably different kind of burger. Add a pop of color to any burger night feast with this pesto-loaded pasta salad that's perfect for spring or even summer.

Born from the nation’s obsession with beef coupled with the modern highway system, the humble burger can be high-end or low — grabbed quickly via drive-thru or sought out as a destination. It’s hard to say what makes a perfect burger, simply because there are so many different iterations of the seemingly simple beef and bun device. Replicate your favorite steakhouse burgers at home — these are packed with flavor and reliably juicy, even when cooked to well-done. If you're a fan of creamy potato salads, this will become your new favorite side dish. The crunchy celery, fresh dill, and bacon make it a go-to for any backyard barbecue. Sure, you can grab a bag of potato chips to serve as a quick and easy side, but why not take things one step further by doctoring up those chips with an easy spice mix.

This thick, peppery, smoked burger is the toast of the town right now, in part because it serves as an antidote to so much smash burger fascination. Served with raw white onions and pickles to cut through the fat, this is undoubtedly the burger of the moment. Here grass-fed New Zealand wagyu beef is served as a default double with onion jam, pickles, and plenty of lettuce.

The key to making these French fries stand out from the crowd is a homemade lemon-pepper seasoning. It adds a zippy kick to just about anything. Pieces of chicken seasoned and fried to golden perfection. Add 3 pounds of 85% lean ground beef and 3 finely sliced scallions (if using).

Grill the burgers 2 to 4 minutes on the first side until nicely browned. Flip and cook on the second side a few minutes more, until desired doneness is reached. The panade in these burgers keeps the meat tender and juicy, even when overcooked, so these burgers are ideal for kids, the elderly, pregnant women, or anyone who just prefers their burgers well done. To be sure, for many minimum wage workers, the pay raises are needed. Don't be fooled by the name—these fries are just as delicious alongside burgers as they are a good side for steak. The cheesy parmesan coating and Italian seasoning will have you going back for more.

12 juicy delicious wings tossed in any flavor you want with large fries and beverage. 2 of our chicken strips on toasted Texas toast with mayo, lettuce and tomatoes. It's impossible to throw a perfectly-buttered bun without hitting a burger joint in Dallas, and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

In the land of smash burger ubiquity, it’s nice to see native son Alvin Cailan return to LA with a thick pub-style burger at Amboy Quality Meats and Delicious Burgers, tucked inside the former Chinatown home of Chego. The shop is always rotating through other styles, so expect something new and worthwhile just about every single day. Watts’s most beloved meal is at Hawkins, where the loosely-formed beef patties arrive thick and impressive from time well spent on the griddle. This restaurant has stood the test of time and can trace its roots back to 1939.

The Lake House Review Movies The New York Times

the lake house movie

At the lake house, Kate is distraught with grief that she failed to save Alex and collapses to her knees at the mailbox. In 2006, physician Kate Forster leaves a lake house she has been renting near Chicago and starts a job at a downtown hospital. She leaves a note in the mailbox asking the next tenant to forward her mail and explaining that the painted-on pawprints on the front walkway were there when she moved in as was the box in the attic. It has occasional dark moods and sad moments, but no bad language or sex.

Alex’s narcissistic father, respected architect Simon Wyler, is hospitalized and dies. Kate finds a book of photos of Simon’s work which hasn't been published in Alex’s time that includes a photo of Simon and Alex as a little boy at the lake house. Not wanting him to wait until it is published, she leaves it for him in the mailbox, hoping it will comfort him. The gesture convinces Alex and Kate that they should try to meet.

The bar scene in the Loop where Kate is seen sitting on the barstool, speaking with the woman at the wooden bar, is the real "Millers Pub" located at 134 S Wabash Ave, Chicago, IL 60603. Kate and Alex, by means of handwritten letters placed in that mailbox (and read in back-and-forth voice- over to simulate real-time conversations), fall deeply and achingly in love. Alex is coolly, almost sadistically indifferent to a co-worker (Lynn Collins) who all but throws herself at his feet, while Kate has recently broken up with a perfectly decent but manifestly inadequate fiancé (Dylan Walsh), who keeps showing up no matter what year it is. She also has a gentle mother (Willeke van Ammelrooy) and a wise boss (Shohreh Aghdashloo), who serve as confidantes, while Alex is burdened with an imperious, narcissistic father (Christopher Plummer), a famous architect who designed that strange, impractical house by the lake.

Alex makes a reservation at a restaurant two years in advance for him, but the next day for Kate. Heartbroken, Kate ends their relationship and stops visiting the lake house to settle for a future with Morgan. Alex places their letters in a box in the house’s attic, like what Kate described in her first letter, and moves in with his brother Henry, also an architect.

After filming, the house was required to be removed, and a simple fishing dock was put in its place.[4] The downtown scenes are in The Loop. The scene where Henry and Alex talk on the street after being in their father's office was filmed on the 400 block of South Michigan Ave, in front of the Fine Arts Building and the Auditorium Theater. Kate asks Alex to find a copy of Jane Austen's Persuasion that she left at a train station, which he does, and Alex takes Kate on a tour of his favorite architecture in Chicago. Both eventually meet at a birthday party Kate’s then boyfriend, an attorney named Morgan, throws for her. Despite sharing a kiss, Alex does not tell Kate about the letters. "The Lake House," while completely preposterous, is not without charm. The social obstacles that used to exist — in the real world and, more intensely, in Production Code-governed Hollywood — have lost their forbidding power, which may be why supernatural and science fiction touches are required to keep the idea of romantic longing alive. On Valentine’s Day, 2006 for Alex, he recalls Kate’s mentioning Daley Plaza and hurries to the lake house to retrieve their letters.

His general lack of curiosity — he doesn't ask who won the presidential election or the World Series, or pester her for stock market tips — is in keeping with the fuzziness of the film's conceit. If you approach it with a rational, skeptical mind, "The Lake House" will fall apart almost immediately. You'll just have to accept that a book can travel through the mail to a date earlier than the one printed on its copyright page, and that a fancy Chicago restaurant will hold an unconfirmed reservation for two years.

So while the general public has not, as far as I can tell, been clamoring for a reunion, "The Lake House" nonetheless functions as a fascinating experiment. Is the chemistry — or, given that "Speed" was all about the velocity of bodies in motion, the physics — still there? It is, although in this case the viewer will also have to grapple with a heavy dose of Hollywood metaphysics, which keeps the leads apart for most of the movie. But these two stars have a habit of being more appealing than their material. This is not just a matter of excellent facial bone structure, but also of a sly ability to play simultaneously in and against type.

Alex does find Kate in Daley Plaza but stops himself from greeting her having received her letter. The contrivances of the plot, which may require occasional glances at a multiyear date book, are smoothly handled by David Auburn's script and by Mr. Agresti's direction. Visually, "The Lake House" is elegant without being terribly showy, with a connoisseur's eye for Chicago's architectural glories. But the movie is, above all, a showcase for its stars, who seem gratifyingly comfortable in their own skin and delighted to be in each other's company again, in another deeply silly, effortlessly entertaining movie. At the start, Ms. Bullock's character, Kate, a stressed-out physician who has just completed her residency, moves out of the architectural curiosity that gives the picture its title, leaving a note in the mailbox for the next tenant.

Meanwhile, Kate and Morgan meet with Henry, who they hired to design a house they bought together. When Kate asks about a drawing of the lake house displayed in Henry’s office, Henry says the artist was his brother, Alex. Kate realizes Henry’s brother is the same Alex she was writing to and asks about him, but Henry explains he died on that day two years earlier. Realizing Alex was the man she failed to save at Daley Plaza, Kate rushes to the lake house herself and writes a frantic message to Alex begging him to wait two years and find her at the lake house.

That would be Mr. Reeves's Alex, a soulful real estate developer who turns out actually to be the previous tenant. Some unexplained wrinkle in the space-time continuum — or a serious glitch at the postal service — has made it possible for Kate, in 2006, to correspond with Alex, who is still making his way through 2004. "The Lake House," a wondrously illogical time-travel romance directed by Alejandro Agresti, is notable mainly for reuniting Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, who together survived a harrowing bus ride in "Speed." That was 12 years ago — how time flies!

Notes

Because Ms. Bullock and Mr. Reeves have become such familiar screen presences, their performances turn out, more often than not, to be genuinely surprising. Ms. Bullock likes to be difficult, to temper her radiance with grouchiness, while Mr. Reeves, when the mood strikes, can inflect his mild, baffled affect with meanness, moodiness and even a hint of thorny intelligence. Sandra Bullock is an enormously likable actor in the right role, and so is Keanu Reeves, although here they're both required to be marginally depressed because of events in their current (but not simultaneous) lives. Many of his problems circle around his father, Louis Wyler (Christopher Plummer), a famous Chicago architect. The old man is an egocentric genius who designed the Lake House, which his son dislikes because, like Louis himself, it lives in isolation; there aren't even any stairs to get down to the water. "Not much has changed," Kate writes to him at one point, when he asks what things are like in the future.

They both leave their letters in the mailbox beside the sidewalk that leads to the bridge that leads to the glass house.

Box office

— and since then they have gone their separate movie-star ways, into the "Miss Congeniality" and "Matrix" franchises, as well as into a startlingly long list of bad movies, of which I will mention only "Hope Floats" and "Sweet November." They do arrange one date, which involves them in some kind of time-loop misunderstanding, I think. I mean, I understand the event she refers to, but not whether it is a necessary event or can be prevented.

While having lunch in Daley Plaza on Valentine’s Day, 2006, Kate witnesses a man get hit by a car and tries but fails to save him. Depressed, she returns to the lake house and finds Alex’s letter. They regularly trade letters, using the mailbox’s red flag to determine when the other has received their message. Eventually, they learn that they are living two years apart, but can communicate through the mailbox almost instantly.

Top 30 Modern Ceiling Design Ideas

A statement ceiling is a great way to add drama and interest to a room. You could paint the ceiling a bold color, or use wallpaper or paneling to create a unique design. Wallpapered ceilings also create fun focal points in children’s rooms. “At 393 West End Avenue, a storied building within a landmark enclave on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, I recently added a Voutsa modern floral wallpaper in the children’s bedroom. This created a whimsical and playful feel while giving the illusion of higher ceilings by drawing the eye upwards,” says interior designer Crystal Sinclair.

Make a statement with an artistic design

Still, the minimalist plasterboard design is a thing now among those who appreciate the simplicity of forms. The drywall material feels at home paired with LED strips in decluttered spaces. Although new ceiling design trends are more about variety, there is a small place for simple approaches since modesty cannot get out of trend.

This scrumptiously playful scheme features a sloped teal ceiling and tonal minty door, contrasted with mono floor and wall tiling for an energized morning wake-up! The angle of the ceiling is defined by the bold shade, giving the space a graphic edge. It just goes to show(er) that only good things come from transforming your ceiling with a color hit. For subtle tonal contrast, paint the walls and ceiling in a light gray or nature-inspired neutral, and off-set by finishing beams, recesses and open-shelving in a fresh white.

Illuminating Spaces

The interior turns out to be holistic, with the effect of solidity due to the Shadowline. It seems that the ceiling is not visually in contact with the walls. And most importantly, you can install any type of lighting on such ceilings. This boxed-beam ceiling packs a welcome addition of unexpected color, with forest green painted inside each square. Because the rest of the space, including built-ins, trim, and a white area rug, implements light colors, the green ceiling and blue accent wall don't feel overwhelming.

To provide you with some inspiration for the 'fifth wall' in your living room, we have gathered a collection of our favorite living room ceiling ideas. It is a classic that makes it possible to expand the space optically, and at the same time, it suits any design. You can use a white ceiling in a wide variety of styles – from baroque to eclecticism or hi-tech. For example, too much white (ceiling and walls) causes a hospital room’s persistent feeling. It might sound like the obvious color choice for a ceiling, but let sky-inspired shades bring positive calm and serenity into sociable spaces. A key color trend for 2022, choose a soft pastel shade for a calming and uplifting look, or opt for a bolder teal or dramatic indigo in hallways and dining areas to add high impact.

Easy Ceiling Ideas

However, choosing the right false ceilings with the right false ceiling material is not as easy as it seems. For a more adventurous look, turn to ceiling wallpaper ideas or paint to make a real colorful impact on a surface that is often left white. With this use of color adding a more modern edge to the neutral space, the gray also creates a darker zone in the room, complemented by the black furniture pieces and accessories. As we have discussed, using wood for your ceiling living room ideas can create a inviting and timeless appeal, and is great for making a large or open plan living room feel warm and cozy.

Color in interior decoration is the first thing that forms the spatial image of a room. Every item on this page was hand-picked by a House Beautiful editor. If your home was built or remodeled before 1980 and the existing ceiling is covered with sprayed acoustical material or acoustical tiles, have a sample checked for asbestos. A positive test is the signal to call in a professional abatement contractor to remove the old ceiling. Whether you have high ceilings or a standard style, there are plenty of living room ceiling ideas to give your space a new look. A few budget-friendly options include painting your ceiling a new color, adding paneling or tiles, or even wallpapering the ceiling.

How to analyze captured data (Hot-Buttons), draw conclusions and suggest appropriate new ceiling designs?

The installation of a mirror can only be done properly by professional contractors. Since they are easy to clean and moisture resistant, mirror ceilings are popularly used in bathrooms. Modern false ceiling designs nowadays incorporate carved designs on POP or gypsum to copy this luxurious aesthetic. Wood carvings are a sought-after design because of their traditional look.

This helps to still allow for a second floor in other areas of the home. Read about backsplash sheets in metal finishes and get design ideas to add beauty to your home. Are you remodeling and considering alternatives to drywall ceilings? This article will shed some light on stylish options for your custom taste. Drop down ceilings come in a wide variety of popular styles and performance features and are a quick way to give a tired room a facelift.

Prices start as low as $3 per roll and go up to $180 or more. Papering walls is usually a one-person job, but for ceilings it’s better to have two people—one to smooth out the paper while the other holds the rest of roll at the ready. Other than that, the process isn’t much different from papering walls. You can use unpasted or prepasted paper, which has a postage stamp-like backing that activates when wet. If you’re commitment-shy, buy strippable paper—it’s easier to remove. If you’re planning to install paper on the walls, do the ceiling first and then overlap the top of the walls by 1/2 in.

If you are considering a living room feature wall, why not take this one step further and create a stand out artistic design on your ceiling. An attractive option would be installing a mirror cover, which will increase the space and enhance the lighting. It is unpretentious in maintenance and perfectly tolerates temperature changes and humidity. When choosing a kitchen ceiling, remember the unique conditions in this room. It is not recommended to use finishing materials that do not tolerate high humidity and temperature changes.

The same requirements are captured by the designer on the checklist – by ticking the right option selected by the client. To resolve this issue, Builidngandinteriors.com has designed a checklist named – BnI Hot-button Checklist. When it comes to colors, rely more on pastels, because richer and brighter shades visually diminish the room.

Dean’s background in traditional architecture, which requires historical accuracy and getting the detail precisely right, gives him an edge over his peers and affects his overall approach. Our familial studio atmosphere cultivates curiosity, fun, and intellectual rigor. From fashion shows and musical performances to art exhibits and architecture forums, we love hosting events at the studio that nurture cross-pollination among disciplines and promote the creative spirit. This course explores the features, surface materials, and design options for rooftop deck systems and provides an overview of recommended planning and installation guidelines. This vastly sky-lit space serves as a spatial hub, pulling daylight deep into the home’s interior. It features a transverse bridge and a sculpted wood wall that filters and carves light as it moves through the space.

RDAA Project of the Year High Desert Retreat Aidlin Darling Design

This dramatic remodel of a non-descript 1950s hillside residence converts a two-story structure into a three-story home for a growing family. The home boasts contrasting but remarkable views of the city of San Francisco to the east and Sutro Tower to the west. The front and rear facades employ 20-foot-tall, 30-inch-deep steel brise soleils to deflect light and simultaneously frame cherished views while editing out less desirable ones. The southern and northern anchor walls are skinned with hand-troweled plaster and create visual and mental privacy from the adjoining neighboring homes. In between these walls reside crystalline glass-and-steel exterior structures that provide the family with remarkable eastern views of downtown San Francisco and beautiful sunset views through a canopy of backyard trees. A living roof provides ample insulation and rainwater purification as well as an inviting natural respite within the confines of an urban setting.

“The exciting part was coming as close as we could with the architecture to almost kiss the boulders. Channeling the spirit of this mid-century modern home’s original designer, Joseph Esherick, daylight was a primary objective for this comprehensive contemporary transformation. Situated amongst much larger homes in the Pacific Heights district of San Francisco, this project adapts the original design to its present-day context.

The dialogue between earth and sky is reinforced through the home’s material palette of concrete, wood, glass, steel, and diffused light. The home’s once dark interior is completely transformed using restrained materials that reflect, refract, and sculpt light as it is captured. The juxtaposition of heavy and light is carried through to the smallest details. In addition to this atrium space, the house re-establishes its relationship to the landscape by way of its rear façade. A new lower level physically connects the home’s interior to outdoor living space and the landscape. The rear façade and adjacent walls reorient both indoor and outdoor space towards the landscape and city views beyond while editing neighboring structures for mutual privacy.

News from Dezeen Events Guide, a listings guide covering the leading design-related events taking place around the world. At the back of the home, overlooking the site's steep slope, a swimming pool runs nearly the whole width of the house. Because of the area's dry climate and predictable weather, the home is made up of a series of separate wooden volumes clustered under a large, overhanging roof. This elevated vantage led to the name High Desert Retreat for the project, which earned a 2021 AIA Design Award in the interiors category.

At Aidlin Darling Design, we think of design as a sensory art, one where the way a space feels is as important as how it looks. As a multidisciplinary firm, this ethos is our guiding principle across projects of any scale, use, or purpose. The steel bridge—which echoes the design language of the steel brise soleil—extends from the second-floor study into the rear garden.

Tree House by Aidlin Darling engages with wooded site in Silicon Valley

Louvered skylights wash Oliveira’s 15 to 30 foot-long paintings with natural light, providing the only light needed within the space throughout the daylight hours. Benches and cushions are strategically placed to allow visitors to quietly view both the paintings and the adjacent landscape simultaneously. Exterior contemplation spaces are integrated into the use of the center, further intensifying the connection of nature, art and contemplation.

Central to the new design is a large multi-story interior garden atrium that is intended to capture outdoor space within the home. Visitors gaze out through a whole wall of glass to the oak grove on the east. On the facing wall, Oliveira’s immense Diptych, depicting two outstretched wings, is naturally lit by a narrow skylight that runs the length of the painting. The dim interiors are further subdued by a plenitude of dark-stained oak, used for the flooring, slatted ceiling, and simple benches.

Architect's Square Foot Costbook

Designed to promote personal renewal and well-being, the one-story, 4,000-square-foot building recently opened its doors to the Stanford community. The third floor is the master suite, which provides the couple a space to escape the high activity of the children when needed, but also a welcome respite for the kids to play with their parents in the extended master bedroom. This floor also features a hidden work desk and a fireplace with a remarkable view over downtown San Francisco. Given the small footprint of the home and the open floor plan, the entire interior experiences direct light in the morning and evening. The renovation not only accommodates the clients and their three young sons, but also two grandparents. With the addition of the third floor, the home boasts spectacular views over the city to the east and the iconic Sutro Tower to the west.

The grandparents’ and three boys’ bedrooms are on the first floor, adjacent to a small family room. This layout  offers the opportunity for the grandparents and grandchildren to bond. The dark pine planks contrast the pale wood finishes that cover the ceiling, both inside and out. The three-bedroom family home is located on a rocky plateau in the arid landscape, with views of the Coachella Valley and San Jacinto Mountain Range. So it’s no surprise that the Aidlin Darling Design studio is way more than a set of desks, chairs and computers. It is, in fact, a laboratory for testing, exploring and pushing materials.

The dining room flows out to a pool terrace through a sliding glass wall. To the right is the two-bedroom guest wing (hidden behind the forecourt wall) and a kitchen that opens to the terrace. The opposite wing contains the living room, which also spills onto the pool terrace, and the main bedroom suite, with a glass-enclosed bath that projects into the landscape. Josh says the program was fitted around the boulders “like Lego pieces,” and the negative spaces became as important as the volume.
